Description:

Prof-Gnome-theme

Made by paulxfce

Call me old-fashioned, but I do not like all the dark themes out there. My focus is this:

A pleasing, clear and easy-on-the-eyes theme that is meant for those who use the Gnome-desktop professionally on a daily basis.

The focus in this theme is usability and compatibility: GTK-2 applications and GTK-3 applications look virtually the same.

IMPORTANT:

This theme is developed for the gnome DE. It works on GTK3.22 to GTK3.29, and GTK3.32/34/36, NOT GTK 3.30.

How to install:

Download the theme,

> Gnome-PROF-light
> Gnome-PROF-light-DS (Dark Sidebar in the filemanager)
> Gnome-PROF-Darker
>Gnome-PROF-Dark

Just copy the extracted file to a '.themes'-folder you make in your home directory.
Then use Tweak Tool and select the theme.
LOG OUT AND BACK IN for changes to take full effect !

IMPORTANT FOR UBUNTU-USERS:

Ubuntu increasingly use snaps if you download something from the Ubuntu-software-center.
This unfortunately means that they do not follow the theme.
So some app's that are snaps use the default adwaita theme.
For example the Ubuntu-software-center is a snap-package and thus uses Adwaita, instead of Gnome-Prof-theme.
The only (easy) solution is to avoid snap-packages and find their versions in the repositories.

Comments

Please comment if you see things broken, or want differently. I will post fixes as soon as possible.

I congratulate you for your great work with this theme. I use Pentaho in my courses and I can tell you that Adawaita and other themes create conflicts with the pentaho's interface, however this one has been perfect.

Hi Paul ! Thank you for this last version, released on my birthday ! The new font rendering looks great ! However, i would like a visual clue of which button is selected by default in gtk apps dialog window (in gnome shell it is ok), like when i close a terminal while top is running. I have already told you that here a few months ago and you have corrected it but this little problem is back for a while...

True, as much as I would like, it conflicts with the use of REM for determining the size of the buttons. When setting the font f.ex. to 9pt. The buttons are so small that the dots make the textbuttons unreadable.

@paul "sudo flatpak override --filesystem=~/.themes" not working (Ububtu software is still transparent)

"sudo flatpak override --filesystem=/usr/share/themes" doesn't work either.

Ubuntu uses snap, not flatpak. So the command is useless... My fault.

BTW, built-in themes Yaru and Awaita are also installed in /usr/share/themes (this is where I installed custom GTK3 themes). How come Ubuntu software app behave normally (not becoming transparent)? without any need to do the flatpak override?

Yaru and Adwaita are part of the default themes for snap-packages. Gnome-Prof is not. That is why, when using my theme, it defaults to Adwaita

Beautiful theme. However on Pop os flatpak workaround did not worked. Their own theme works with flatpak.
Anyway, very nice, subtle and clean theming. I wish it wouldn't be associated with mac os, and future development will deviate to something unique. Thanks!

Very nice , one of few themes that works well on Elementary y OS . I did notice one thing though, when opening synaptic window buttons don't show up but i can still click on the are to close window. I know you did not specify Pantheon among desktops that you meant it for but maybe you could since i would say it works and looks good .

how could I tweak nemo to have nautilus sidebar-color ?
both the light and then dark version have dark shell-themes. wouldn't it be nice to have a light shell-theme too ?

For ubuntu-users complaining about Ubuntu-software-center not applying the theme: this is because the Software-center is a flatpak, not a deb. For flatpaks use this command:
sudo flatpak override --filesystem=~/.themes
Next, make sure the theme-file is situated under the '.themes'-folder.
Then, open gnome tweak tool (you might need to install it first), and choose the Gnome-Prof-theme to your liking. Now flatpaks will follow the theme.

8 great - beautiful theme. I really love how clean the UI is with this theme. The sidebars in Nautilus are particularly nice to me. Only issue I'm seeing is around the border radius for apps like Visual Studio Code, GIMP that don't have the GNOME CSD titlebars. The curve is more pronounced in those apps. https://imgur.com/a/PicnbVk Anyway to fix this?
